I would recommend the D80 (or even a D40/D40x kit) and spending the extra money on a longer lens with VR, which would help the beginner.
The 55-200mm VR lens (careful not to get the non-VR older one) is US$249 list.
Alternately a bare body and the 18-200mm VR all-in-one zoom would be another good combination.
mega pix past 6 dont matter unless you do 13×19 and larger frequenty…the canon 1d mk 2 is a pro camera that all canon sports shooters use and thats 8mp
if you want to use flash alot i suggest the d80 and if you want to shoot low light things with no flash the 30d has a use able iso 3200
also decide based on what lens you want with it, canon has more lenses past 100mm with image stabilizer(expensive) but nikon has a 17-200vr lens that might be ideal for someone not wanting more then 1 lens
i would personally go with the nikon but this is only because i’ve had bad luck with canons and my nikon has never failed me
The Nikon d80 is good camera…………..u might as well look at the canon eos400d
Definetaly The Nikon Cause its a 10.2 Mega pixel and i have Nikon and its far better than Superb!!!!~~~ & i got my Nikon about 22 yearz ago and it still takes gorgeous pictures!!!~~

Tough decision, eh?
D80 has 10 Megapixel but 30D has a Magnesium alloy body.
I would go for Nikon in this case for the extra pixel resolution.
