If you have had any experience in the past with a portrait studio, you know how long the process used to be. Once you went to the studio, it took about a week or so before the proofs were ready for you to view. You had to make a second trip to the studio to view those proofs and choose the ones you wanted to include in your package. From there it was another one to two weeks before you would have the portraits in your hand—if you were having holiday pictures done, it could be as long as a month to six weeks from the time you had the portraits taken to the time they were in your hands.

The introduction of digital photography made obtaining portraits quicker and easier. Instead of having to wait for proofs to arrive before a customer could choose the package they wanted, it was just a matter of minutes. In some studios the photographer took the picture and someone else uploaded the pictures to the computer where the customer could choose the package they wanted at the same time the portraits were taken. Instead of taking one to two weeks for your package to arrive, in some cases it would only take a week since the only processing was to print the pictures the customer wanted right from the computer. Certainly, they would need sorting and placed on the photo paper correctly. However, this process is much quicker than having to process them using the darkroom and chemical solutions that were part of film processing.

Don’t expect because it takes less time to process your order for portraits that any cost savings will be included with the package. In fact, digital photography has had no affect on the cost of portrait packages—the costs have increased just as much as they did during the time when professional photography included more expensive equipment and more processing time. In fact this has been the case in all areas of photography and not just the professional portrait studio. One only needs to look at how much school pictures have gone up in price to understand how little impact digital photography has had on prices. After all, in spite of the lower cost of digital photograph processing, there have been substantial increases in overhead costs for the professional portrait studio.

One of the most important characteristics of photography is the lighting, hence if there is too much lighting then definitely your shot gets overexposed or worse, you don’t get a shot at all. If there is little or no lighting then your photo also suffers because you either lose your photo all together or it comes out underexposed. Most of the time when it comes to photography lighting, natural light is all one needs. In most occasions you will find most people waiting for sunrise and sunset to take magnificent photos. You will also find that photography lighting is also important when it comes to cloudy days or days when it is raining many people have no interest in taking photos. However there are a few people who don’t mind taking photos on this kind of days and some even take photos of lightening which could be extremely  dangerous if you are not clever. It is best that you take photography lighting seriously especially if you don’t want to keep overexposing your photos to too much sunlight. Most photographers switch to flash lights if it gets dark and want to take more photos, this usually depends on where you are and how dark it maybe. If you go to photo studios even during the day you will find that the camera man might switch on the studio photography light or will switch to a camera flash, or to an off-camera flash. Photography is mainly about instinct, if you have it, believe me you will enjoy greatly taking your photos.

In the past it took several weeks from the time of a sitting to the time a customer was actually able to receive professional photographs. Part of this process involved waiting a week to see the proofs from which a customer would choose the finished photographs he wished to purchase. Today with digital photography, it is just a matter of days until the customer can view the photographs on the computer. Then he can choose the ones he wishes to purchase.

The age of digital photography has made a huge impact on the world of professional photography, not just for the photography studio but also for those who take professional photographs for various events as well. For example, it means those who wish to have a professional photograph from a prom or graduation can take the photograph home with them in many cases. With the smaller digital printers it is possible for a photographer to print pictures at an event rather than asking those wishing to have pictures to wait to receive them in the mail. This, of course, depends on the space allotted to the photographer and the number of people who are attending the event in question.

Another way digital photography has impacted professional photography is the smaller size of the digital camera and the ease of use. The professional cameras that were used in the past tended to be rather large and were often complicated to use. Film processing alone was an expensive and complicated process that required special courses if one wanted to pursue a career in professional photography. That doesn’t mean photographers no longer need to go to school to learn about the field, but it is certainly not as complicated as it once was. The cost of expensive processing equipment is also eliminated and has been replaced with digital photo printers and a computer. The initial cost is much lower in comparison to buying all of the darkroom equipment that was once necessary for film processing.

We have seen many changes in digital photography since it was first introduced in the 20th century. These changes have had a major impact on the photography industry as a whole and will continue to do so as technology changes and new and better digital photography equipment enters the market.
