What Is A Good, Entry-level Dslr For Long-term Use?

I am a beginner, amateur photographer who is looking to make his first purchase of a DSLR. I have done some research on the available cameras in the market and have come up with some options for myself namely: 1) Sony A350; 2) Sony A700K; 3) Nikon D90; 4) Nikon D70 and; 5) Canon EOS Series.
I understand that most reviews will name the Nikon D40 as the best choice for beginners but another factor influencing my purchase is usability over a long period of time. Thus, I will need a camera which allows me to use a variety of compatible lenses and accessories over a period of time. Also, I feel that the D40′s relatively low MP resolution will not serve me well enough for my future endeavours.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m currently leaning towards Sony’s as I’m comfortable with their user-friendly products and their built-in-body image stabilisers and up-and-coming range of lenses. But I am willing to hear out cases for other cameras as well as other brands i.e. Pentax, Minolta, Olympus.

Dslr Recommendations?

Need a little advice here. I am semi-literate in DSLR terminology and use and I think enough so to make at least a relatively informed comparison between products but I am very inexperienced with them none the less.
My father is planning on buying a new DSLR that he intends to use to take landscape photographs with the highest possible detail. He is not a photographer and not experienced, his requirements are high build quality, the unit must be able to keep dirt out as best as possible and it may well get wet, also, though I’m fairly sure he’d be hard pressed to perceive the extra quality, he is insistent upon very high sensitivity and quality. So far he is focusing his comparison upon canon 40d. it’s equivalent in Nikon (I’ve forgotten the name) and the Nikon D700, the last one is one he looked at and had some advice on and he was told it was a professional camera that throws you in the deep end and is not easy on amateurs though my father tends to like to buy things given that type of description regardless of whether or not it’s best suited because he tends to think it will be the best overall product because it is high range and high price.
He seems to be willing to spend any between 1000 to 2000 Pounds Sterling on it, though I’m rather hoping I can convince not to go quite so off the rails on something he’s unlikely to use very often, anyway what camera (any camera not just the ones I mentioned) do you think would be good for this type of photography with an amateur behind the lens?

I’m A Photography Student, What Type Of Dslr Should I Get For My Major?

I am new to the photography field, just started school for it. I haven’t made my decision if I want to be a photographer for regular photography (wedding or such) or being a professional photographer to be a photojournalist or something of the sort.
My semester will start soon and I am looking for a DSLR camera that can do the job but also not to expensive since I am a starter. I have been suggested by my friends to get a Nikon D80 and I think I kinda like it, but is there any other cameras that can be compared to this one that might perhaps be even cheaper? I am planning to spend about $1000 altogether, the camera and the accessories, since I’m strapped for cash because of the economy. So, can any one kindly suggest me any DSLR that can be compared to Nikon D80?
Oh, and please don’t just say the product name, but tell me if you have any experience or not with the camera you are suggesting.
Thank you very much.
